As you may have noticed we've had quite a lot of moss this year....
The most important point is that any moss MUST be killed off using an appropriate moss killer such as sulphate of iron before even thinking about getting the scarifying machine out of the shed. At the start of the month we sprayed 'soi' on the surrounds, tees and fairways. Failing to kill the moss properly will just result in the moss being chopped up and spread about the course - often leaving you with more moss than you started with.

Raking is the preferred method for removing moss. For small lawns a wire ‘spring bok’ or 'fan rake' will do, but it's much easier with a hand pulled rolling lawn scarifier.
For us greenkeepers scarifying would be very difficult using the above methods, which is why we have this beauty of a machine... the Sisis Hydraulic Veemo. This machine allows us to cover big areas in little time.

Scarification is a very important operation. In spring (and autumn for that matter) scarification is best combined with other operations, like top dressing, overseeding and applying fertiliser. Scarification is carried out to remove organic matter from around the base of the grass plants and tidy up any straggly lateral growth. In a nutshell, scarification removes material, probably in the form of thatch or moss that will otherwise prevent good dense grass growth.
To finish the job we use the blower to remove any of the debris......
A tidy fairway is a happy fairway :)
Next job on the fairways is to spray with a water soluble fertiliser, to encourage plant appearance and growth......
